CORSETRY

Historically corsets were worn as anundergarment to shape or support the wearer's form. The support and shape of a corset is provided primarily by the tailoring of the inner corset (usually woven cotton material) and "boning" sewn into a casing.

In "fashion" corsets the fabric is often elastic and the boning is plastic or some kind of composite.  While these fabric corsets are very flexible, they do not provide much shape, and although they are less expensive than steel boned corsets, theyoften suffer structural failure (broken boning or corsets that just flip up when one sits down.

Steel-boned corsets use flat steel boning and spiral steel boning to smooth the wearer's shape and curves without risk of breakage or failure.

Usually the front closure is provided by a steel busk or zipper, but some manufacturers accomplish the front closure by lacing.  Virtually all of the corsets carried by Classique Boutique use a front busk or zippered closure for strength and smooth lines.

The rear closure is always provided by lacing or ribbons which add compression to the corset shape (and the wearer).

Wearing a properly fitted steel-boned corset should not hurt.  The compression of the lacing is more akin to a hug which is adjustable to the wearer's comfort level.  Corsets do not, per se, impede your breathing.. just think of all the opera performers who regularly sing while corseted.

Putting on a corset is more easily accomplished with assistance, however some corset styles can be tightened by the wearer without assistance. Practice and ingenuity are the keys.
